International Opportunity

As I was looking on the internet for a Guide Company that we could approach for pen friends, I came across an international camp that is taking place in England next year. Twenty years ago, my then assistant and I took four girls to this very same camp in West Sussex. I've put an open invitation to all the Guides and parents and it looks like we might have two or three girls who will be going.

This is a video from WS 13.  

One of the girls interested will need sponsorship as her parents will not be able to provide the money for her travels.  We will also be doing some serious fundraising. The first event is on 5 November where we have booked a stall at a craft market. The girls will be helping children make 3D cards, make bracelets or necklaces, ice cupcakes or biscuits or make racing cars out of finger biscuits.

Mad Hatters and an enrollment

Last week the Brownies were having a Princess tea party so we decided to have a Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

The Brownies learned table settings and good manners as befits young princesses.

Guides decorated their table and made some snacks and sandwiches and then ate their tea according to the throw of a dice.

Today we enrolled our newest Guide.

Candlelight Club

Once a year the Gauteng Central Region holds a tea for the Candlelight Club which is a group of state pensioners who are hosted monthly by various charitable organisations. Guides, Brownies and Rangers in the region collect basic foodstuffs and toiletries and these are handed out to the pensioners.

Guiders, Commissioners and GSG members were busy from early on setting up tables, plates of food, cups and plates. Guides and Brownies arrived a little later to take tea and coffee orders and serve them. After everybody had had a good tea, the pensioners enjoyed a couple of games of Bingo and then were sent home with a tub of basic essentials. The Brownies had decorated some of the containers with bits of coloured paper and they looked very festive.

The adult leaders and the girls worked very hard but had the satisfaction of doing a good turn.

Regional Hike

Five Waverley Guides joined the Regional hike at Rustig in Magaliesberg, including three that are not yet enrolled. We had luxury accommodation for Guides - beds with mattresses in dormitories instead of sleeping in a tent on the ground. The first day was a 5km circular hike and much tougher than I bargained for but the girls managed fine. Then we could go on a game walk in  afternoon, followed by yummy supper and campfire.

The second day was only three kilometers and not nearly so steep although we did enjoy going into and out of some gorges where possibly streams used to be..
All together a lovely weekend with all the Guides behaving like Guides and making new friends, learning, being responsible and learning to lead.
